Nouvelle-Zélande // Ile Nord : Coromandel Peninsula

La péninsule de Coromandel est située à 2h30 de la ville d'Auckland. Ce petit coin de paradis peut-être visité en quelques jours et regorge de paysages toujours plus diversifiés. Nous avons décidé de louer une voiture avec la compagnie Usave pour une durée de 2 jours.

Jour 1 : Hot Water Beach & Catedrale Cove

Après environ 2 heures de voiture au coeur d'une nature incroyable, notre premier arrêt fût Hot Water Beach. Ce spot incontournable de Coromandel est connu pour ses courants d'eau chaude situés sous certains amas de sables. Vous aurez l'opportunité de louer des pelles pour quelques dollars et de partir à la recherche de ce courant unique ! Une fois trouvé, construisez votre propre jacuzzi à seulement quelques pas de l'océan ; une activité ludique, caractéristique de cette jolie plage.

Vous pourrez apercevoir sur cette image, la fumée qui s'échappe du sable.

L'eau y est également très claire, la baignade est très agréable. Vous pourrez profiter de cette plage pour y faire une pause déjeuner avant de reprendre la route.

Tips : - Il n'est possible d'accéder à cette plage que lorsque la marée est basse, renseignez-vous avant votre arrivée à Coromandel ! - Les routes sont difficiles à conduire : des virages extrêmement serrés dans les hauteurs vous y attendent, alors soyez vigilants.

- Faites attention, l'eau est parfois extrêmement chaude (la température peut avoisiner les 90 degrés), vous pouvez donc facilement vous brûler la peau.

Catedrale Cove

Il s'agit là de votre deuxième arrêt incontournable lors de votre visite à Coromandel.

Située à seulement 15 minutes en voiture de Hot Water Beach, cette jolie plage est accessible de différentes façons : une traversée en ferry, une arrivée en kayak ou une randonnée d'1h30 aller-retour. Nous vous conseillons d'opter pour la marche ! De beaux paysages vous y attendent, et votre baignade à l'arrivée n'en sera que meilleure.

Une fois arrivé, la plage est époustouflante ! L'eau y est turquoise et le sable blanc.

Une fois la journée terminée, nous nous sommes rendues dans la ville de Coromandel Town pour y passer la nuit. Nous avons séjourné au Tide Water Motel, il s'agit à la fois d'un camping disposant de parking spot si vous voyagez en van, et de cabanes privatives. Comptez environ 50 euros la nuit pour deux.

Notre cabanon pour la nuit. Tips : - Un parking est à votre disposition à Cathedral Cove : Hahei Park & Ride - Munissez-vous d'une quantité d'eau suffisante pour cette marche que vous effectuerez bien souvent sous d'importantes chaleurs !

- N'hésitez pas à aller faire un tour à Coromandel Town, bien que très petit, ce village dispose de restaurants et d'une balade aux abords d'un port duquel vous aurez peut-être la chance d'observer un joli coucher de soleil.

Jour 2 : Karangahake Gorge & Owharoa Falls

Pour ce deuxième et dernier jour, nous avons décidé de partir à la visite des Karangahake Gorge. Des anciennes mines d'Or s'y situent au coeur d'un paysage unique.

Une fois sur place, vous aurez le choix entre différents chemins de randonnées. Ces chemins longent, pour la majorité la rivière Ohinemuri. Vous pourrez donc profiter d'une petite baignade dans un cadre idyllique !

Nous vous recommandons fortement d'emprunter les chemins offrant une traversée des anciens tunnels de l'époque des mines. Marcher sur les chemins de fers dans ce décor d'un autre temps vous garantie un dépaysement total.

Tips : - Munissez-vous d'une lampe torche, en effet lorsque vous traversez les tunnels il y fait très sombre ! - Essayez de disposer d'assez de temps pour choisir au minimum 2 chemins différents : vous ne serez pas déçus par la diversité des paysages !

Owharoa Falls

Une fois notre visite terminée, nous nous sommes dirigées vers la Owharoa Falls. Cette cascade est située à seulement quelques minutes en voitures des Karangahake Gorge. Vous avez également le choix d'y accéder à pieds.

Tip : N'hésitez pas à vous baigner aux Owharoa Falls avant de reprendre la route !

New Zealand // North Island : Coromandel Peninsula

The Coromandel Peninsula is only 2h30 from Auckland by car. This little piece of paradise can be visited in a few days and is full of varied landscapes. We've decided to rent a car with the company Usave for 2 days.

Day 1 : Hot Water Beach & Catedrale Cove

After 2 hours of driving in the heart of an incredible nature, our first stop was Hot Water Beach. This spot of Coromandel is known for its currents of hot water located under some sand piles. You will have the opportunity to rent shovels for a few dollars to look for this unique current! Once found, build your own little Jacuzzi just in front of the ocean; a fun activity, characteristic of this beautiful beach.

The water is also very clear, swimming is very pleasant. You can enjoy this beach for a lunch break before taking the road to Cathedral Cove.

Tips :

- It is possible to access this beach only when the tide is low, check that information before your arrival in Coromandel! - The roads are quite difficult to drive: extremely tight turns in the heights are waiting for you, so be careful. - Pay attention, the water is sometimes extremely hot (the temperature can be around 90 degrees), so you can easily burn your skin.

Catedrale Cove

This was our second stop during our visit in Coromandel Peninsula. Located at just 15 minutes drive from Hot Water Beach, this beautiful place is accessible in many ways: ferry crossing, kayak trip or 1.5 hour of walk. We advise you to opt for the walking option! Beautiful landscapes are waiting for you and your swmin when reaching the beach will only be better!

Once arrived, the beach is breathtaking! The water is turquoise and the sand is white.

After that, we went to the town of Coromandel for the night. We stayed at the Tide Water Motel, it is both a campground with spot parking if you are traveling by van and private cottages. Count around 50 euros a night for two.

Tips : - A carpark is available at Cathedral Cove: Hahei Park & ​​Ride. - Get enough water for this walk, you will often do it under heavy heat!

- Do not hesitate to visit Coromandel Town, this small village has restaurants and a walk along a harbor.

Day 2 : Karangahake Gorge & Owharoa Falls

For this second and last day, we decided to visit the Karangahake Gorge. Old gold mines are located in the heart of a unique landscape.

Once there, you will have the choice between different hiking trails. For a majority of them, these paths follow the river Ohinemuri : so you can enjoy a swim in an idyllic frame!

We strongly recommend you to take the paths offering a crossing in the ancient tunnels of the time of the mines. Walking on the railways in this setting of another time guarantees you a total change of scenery.

Tips : - Get a flashlight, when you cross the tunnels it is very dark! - Just try to have enough time to choose at least 2 different paths: you will not be disappointed by the diversity of landscapes!

Owharoa Falls

After our visit, we headed towards Owharoa Falls. These waterfalls are located only a few minutes drive from Karangahake Gorge. You also have the choice to access it by foot.

Tip : Feel free to swim at Owharoa Falls before heading back!
